Freelance charity copywriter | Content designer | Editor

My story
I'm a content specialist with 20+ years experience in content and communications. I've worked in charities, elearning and academic publishing. I've been the sole marketing and digital person, and I've led a team of 8 specialists. I'm passionate about plain language, and I'm skilled at working with sensitive and complex topics.
My clients say I'm calm, methodical, pragmatic and thorough.
You need...
... compelling and clear copy
Words don’t just connect people, they have the power to create meaningful change. Whether you want to tell a story, sell a product, raise income, educate, inform or advise, you need the right words. I can help with report writing, website copy, social posts, email newsletters, campaign messaging, leaflets, posters… and more. I’ve transformed technical content into clear copy, and I’ve written words that convert.
... to know what's working well, and what isn't
Whether you need a single page review, a complete site audit or an SEO or competitive analysis, I can help you identify what’s working well, what isn’t and where there are opportunities to make a difference. I won’t just help you make sense of your data, I’ll give you practical recommendations for changes.
... an extra pair of hands
When you’re busy, you need someone you can trust to pick up what’s needed quickly and efficiently. I’ve been “an extra pair of hands” for charities big and small during hectic times or periods of recruitment. I’ll happily zip through building and migrating website content, drafting emails, doing SEO research – whatever you need. I’ve got lots of experience with CMSes including Umbraco, Drupal, EPiServer, Wagtail and WordPress, I’ve sent emails with Dotdigital and Engaging Networks, and worked with a range of project management and collaboration tools.
... content that works for people (and robots)
SEO, GEO, AIOs, UX, UI… Sometimes it feels like the acronyms are multiplying! Whether you want to make sure your content is found in search engines or AI agents, or that you’re providing a great user experience, I can help. I take a people first approach. That means, I create great content for humans, that is discoverable and usable by robots too. I can help with keyword research, content optimisation, user research and content design.
... a second pair of eyes
Whether you need support with copyediting a long report or a proofreader for a set of pages, let me be a second pair of eyes. I’ve worked on technical and specialist content for subjects as diverse as safeguarding, town planning, theology and biblical studies, police and prison custody, literature, domestic abuse, film and TV production, accountancy, online safety and nutrition. I’m passionate about plain language and working with, and developing, authors.

What does it cost?
No two charity copywriting or content design projects are the same, so I tailor my costs based on your specific needs. I work on both a project basis (where I provide a quote based on your requirements) and a retained days basis (where you 'buy' a number of days to allocate as you need). My rate starts at £300–£350 a day, which is in line with my experience and competitive for the charity sector.
However, I work with charities because I want to support the important work you do and, having worked in-house, I know just how precious your budget is. So if you have something different in mind, please get in touch for a no obligation chat.
